- enriquto 4y ago> (It's always interesting how these classics have had less discussion on HN than I expect them to have had.) Maybe this is a good indicator for extremely high-quality posts? People start reading the link, and it is so mesmerizing that they forget they came from HN.
- dang 4y agoI do think there may be something to that, but I'm not sure what the phenomenon actually is, and I'm not sure it indicates high-quality posts*. For example it may be more that the title doesn't trigger reflexive responses. * Would that it were so easy! I've never found a programmatic indicator that holds up that way. The data is far too noisy.
- kreetx 4y agoWhat is HAKMEM? Seems like a collection of notes on ..math?
- LeoPanthera 4y agoHAKMEM, alternatively known as AI Memo 239, is a February 1972 "memo" (technical report) of the MIT AI Lab containing a wide variety of hacks, including useful and clever algorithms for mathematical computation, some number theory and schematic diagrams for hardware – in Guy L. Steele's words, "a bizarre and eclectic potpourri of technical trivia". Contributors included about two dozen members and associates of the AI Lab. The title of the report is short for "hacks memo", abbreviated to six upper case characters that would fit in a single PDP-10 machine word (using a six-bit character set).

- EdwardCoffin 4y agoThere's a typo in HAKMEM #70 [1]. The item is a mate-in-3 as described, but always seemed mysteriously mundane to me. One day I happened across the book that the memo cites as the source [2] and found that there's a typo in the HAKMEM version of the problem: they put the white bishop on KB7, but it should be on KB8. The original makes for a much more interesting problem. I wrote it up in a reddit post [3] with some notes [4] (most of which I've duplicated here). Be warned that the first comment there describes the solution.
