MTGreene: GOP will investigate companies that stopped donating to Republicans
- ggm 4y agoThey're entirely free to do so any time. What I think she implies is that they can direct federal and state agencies to conduct this. I find that very troubling. What's the offence here? Maybe the "hook" is some form of collusive behaviour? Or an implied threat from D to regulate or investigate said companies as retaliation, or interfere with contact awards? All of which regrettably have probably been somewhat routine for "both sides" since time began.
- themitigating 4y agoAre you actually trying to "both sides" this? What elected democrat threatened to investigate companies for political reasons?
- Blackstrat 4y agoAre you alleging that this is something democrats haven’t done? If so, do your homework. The government and business have been tightly coupled for years. It’s not new. Should there be investigations? Absolutely. Will there be? Extremely doubtful. Too much money on the table.
- themitigating 4y agoCan you point to a recent example of democrats threatening to investigate companies because they aren't donating to them?
- ggm 4y agoAsking a narrower question like this is good. I can't, noting I'm not the person you asked. The post is about MGT and what she did. I see no evidence Democrats do this specific one thing, which is to make public threats to corporates of revenge for de-funding. It doesn't mean I think the DNC are angels, just this isn't their modus operandi. So, to the wider question: In the wide, are you of the view there is no pressure on donating corporatism in politics across the party system?
- themitigating 4y agoWhy are we asking that question, as a deflection?
- ggm 4y agoNot at all. MTG is a prime scumbag and representative of a dreadful process of destabilizing politics of disruption. If Steve Bannon remained true to his maoist roots her actions could not get more ideally placed to undermine trust in the process of government. But the awful aspect of this is that some distrust in the party system at present is justified. If we act like it's only Peter Theil and Koch distorting politics we do ourselves no service. The democrats get elected as much by machinery as by belief in the social equity they promote. To believe otherwise is naieve. Nancy Pelosi should have been expelled for her share trading. You appear to want to argue somehow there is no taint in democrat organized lobbying. Well fine: it's a trench war right now but please don't try to make us believe Lyndon Johnson wasn't pissing outside the tent when the Kennedys were working their machine, and that neither he nor the Kennedys knew where the bodies were buried, any more than Trueman or any other past democrat figure. They all have feet of clay.
- themitigating 4y agoI didn't say the Democrats were innocent of anything. I'm pointing out that commenting on unrelated and unspecified accusations (in the orignal comment) is whataboutism and a method of deflection Also prove Nancy Pelosi committed insider trading, I don't care what democrats long dead did in the past, and the rest of what you said is more deflection. Pretending that you're somehow above this by talking about trench warefare while continually bringing up unproven allegations is also manipultive and hypocritical.
- themitigating 4y agoJust to add to this because of a recent update. Mike Pence said tonight that the constitution doesn't provide freedom from religion
- ggm 4y agoNope. I'm glued on left. I'm reaching back past Tammany hall here. I'd be amazed if there isn't a long deep tradition of implied threat to companies in their associations with political parties. I'm pretty sure there is here in my own polity (Australia) which is why so many people want explicit exposure of corporate funds to parties above trivial thresholds and why we are so happy not to have PAC and "citizens united" bullshit. The qualitative differences are the megaphone: MGT is using this as a weapon to her base and the wider community. What I think has gone on is the usual back room shenanigans. You think companies investing in Iraq reconstruction weren't lined up 20 deep to talk to D and R about contracts across changes of governments? Or the prior case for Vietnam, or postwar investment in roads for America?

- themitigating 4y agoFor what? I can't believe this kind of crazy comes from an elected official and republicans support her.
- Gibbon1 4y agoFriend used to work for a high wealth individual. He said every year Senator McConnell would stop by and shake his boss down for money roughly the same way a small time Mafioso shakes down the owner of a dry cleaners. It feels to me like with the Republican party the patronage relationship is inverted.

- 1letterunixname 4y agoAre crazy, crooked politicians benefiting human knowledge or advancement somehow that they should be newsworthy? Just stop feeding narcissists attention, and they will have a melt-down and go away.
