Python is a terrible comparison language here. Of course shell is better than Python for shell stuff; no one should suggest otherwise. Python is extremely verbose, it requires you to be precise with whitespace, and using regex has friction because it's not actually built into the language syntax (unless something has changed very recently). The comparison should be to perl or Ruby, both of which will fare better than Python for typical shell-type tasks.
