Depends of what it takes to be a "US auto manufacturer". Ford has had strong sales for decades throughout europe and is routinely the biggest volume seller in the UK. Nearly all those cars were designed and manufactured in Europe and until the Focus none of the popular european models were available for sale in the US. Is is a US manufacturer doing well in Europe when it's an entirely european effort to design and build? Even if it's on the american branding?
This is likely the first time a car designed, engineered, and manufactured in the US tops european sales figures. Tesla is expanding manufacturing to China and Germany and the actual vehicles for sale in europe right now were manufactured in China, but the cars are the same as built in Fresno or Texas, but I think the point stands.
