This article seems to ignore an important bit of history - the hiring of Stephen Elop as Nokia CEO. Elop came from Microsoft and forced the change from Nokia‘s in-house developed Linux systems on the N9xx series (this is now Sailfish OS) to Windows Phone.
In addition, the first Windows-based smartphones from Nokia used version 7 of the OS and could not be upgraded to the (significantly improved) version 8.
Embrace and extinguish at work… I think that Nokia‘s Linux for Smartphones was way ahead of the currently available open source systems for the Librem 5 or Pinephine. What a shame.
