I'm very... Selfish? I suppose is the way to put it.
Beyond what's required, I don't really care about the 'vision'. I'm here to exchange effort for money.
As long as it's reasonably in my skill set/responsibility and doesn't require me to push a boundary like kicking puppies, that's the deal of the day
I care about how I feel about waking up in the morning more than anything. The people I need to work with should be decent, and I don't do well pigeonholed
Finding a place with
- capable teammates
- restraint to not commit members to the first thing they are found to be good at forever
... is harder than you'd expect
If my anxiety reaches a certain level or consistency, I'll look elsewhere
I'm a wizard with Linux internals yet lately find myself "the network guy", for example.
If I didn't know my current team could catch up I'd be carrying so much burden
- vitorfhc 4y agohaving capable teammates decreases a lot how much effort you need, it's something that I highly recommend
- bravetraveler 4y agoCertainly! I was deliberate with capable too. I don't want us all to know the same things, but I'm teachable and expect it of others
- troyvit 4y agoWhat about just pushing puppies around a little? In other words how far are you willing to push your boundaries in terms of exchanging effort for money?
- bravetraveler 4y agoIt's tough to say, the most resilient answer is 'it depends'. Playfully pushing, absolutely! Off a cliff? No way There are some guidelines, I'd like to say I wouldn't break the law... but even that's not very solid. Say a boss wanted me to J-walk, I'd do that -- but I wouldn't participate in fraud. Tough to draw firm/lasting lines, it's an ongoing consideration. I use the word 'no' a lot -- it doesn't hurt edit: One thing that helps with this instead of stopping at 'no' is continuing with, 'instead...' Elaborating on what I'd prefer to do instead, either for moral/legal/administrative fatigue/whatever reasons
