Instead of investing 10 Billion in VR, seems like Meta should have built a phone as good as the iPhone but cheaper since advertising on phones is their bread and butter
- ideamotor 4y agoI agree and yet can you even imagine how dated and terrible it would be?
- lern_too_spel 4y agoYou don't have to imagine. https://readwrite.com/top-10-tech-failures-of-2013/ https://readwrite.com/top-10-tech-failures-of-2013/
- rtev 4y agoBrilliant. How did they miss this opportunity and double down on VR?
- tablespoon 4y ago>> Instead of investing 10 Billion in VR, seems like Meta should have built a phone as good as the iPhone but cheaper since advertising on phones is their bread and butter > Brilliant. How did they miss this opportunity and double down on VR? They tried building a phone when Facebook was more trusted, and it failed. A Facebook Phone project in 2022 would almost certainly be doomed to failure. IIRC, VR was an acquisition and it's more of a wide-open area than phones, so it's more plausible (but still unlikely) they could see success there.
- BizarroLand 4y agoWhen I heard that facebook was buying oculus I honestly believed that it was a terrible idea and that it would ruin what VR can be in a soulless, dirty, ugly corporate cashgrab that made no sense and that was ill-guided, ill-intended, and hopeless. I had no idea that they would completely fail to do a cashgrab and instead make the entire experience either so expensive or so terrible that no one would want to participate in it.
- riku_iki 4y ago> A Facebook Phone project in 2022 would almost certainly be doomed to failure. it should be Free/Open Phone in 2022. Facebook is interested in free platform without any garden walls, so no one rent seek from their platform.
- amadeuspagel 4y agoThey tried with the HTC First[1], which was a total failure. [1]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_First https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_First
- solardev 4y agoIt'd have one app and a button: a long feed that shows you occasional text messages between the ads, and one giant thumbs-up with VR Mark smiling back at you.
- rtev 4y agoFinally, Facebook has stumbled on a product the masses actually want.
- sharemywin 4y agoHow can you get all your stuff transferred over. songs, apps, games everything else you bought and already paid for.
- mikymoothrowa 4y agoWe used to have this problem. Thankfully most of these media is subscription now
- HWR_14 4y agoWow, so we're in the "(IP asset) poverty is freedom" level of social decay?
