In Another Blow to Meta, Apple Demands 30% Cut From Promoted Social Posts
- sharemywin 4y agoWhat a power play. I guess if your a virtual monopoly that's what happens.
- beardyw 4y agoVirtual monopoly of what? Phones 50% in USA, 16% worldwide. Other stuff not so much.
- nisegami 4y agoVirtual monopoly app provider for iOS devices. Pre-empting the web apps comment. It's not the same, in ways that are both good and bad for both the producer and consumer.
- beardyw 4y agoBut this is about access to Meta products isn't it?
- nisegami 4y agoYes, and Apple only allows Meta apps to be installed through their app store.
- tekknik 4y ago
- barelysapient 4y ago> Virtual monopoly app provider for iOS devices. Right, and Ford has a virtual monopoly on the F-150.
- anotherman554 4y agoNo it doesn't. You can buy F-150 parts from third parties.
- catdevz 4y agoFord doesn't operate a marketplace.
- nisegami 4y agoA more apt comparison might be if Ford said you could only listen to their music streaming service on the F-150's entertainment system.
- cercatrova 4y agoAnd of course Apple won't demand 30% from itself when it continues to develop its burgeoning ad business, right? Look, I dislike Meta as much as the next guy, but how anyone can argue that this isn't clear antitrust behavior is beyond me. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2022-08-14/apple-aapl-set-to-expand-advertising-bringing-ads-to-maps-tv-and-books-apps-l6tdqqmg https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2022-08-14/apple-... https://9to5mac.com/2022/09/05/apple-ad-business/ https://9to5mac.com/2022/09/05/apple-ad-business/ https://www.wired.com/story/apple-is-an-ad-company-now/ https://www.wired.com/story/apple-is-an-ad-company-now/
- tekknik 4y agoI can’t see how it’s antitrust behavior. The system only applies if you use in app purchases. All payment providers charge some for usage, even VISA charges fees. Apples fees just happen to be higher. And as always, facebook has an option to make their own phone instead of the metaverse nobody is asking for. To me, Apple is the good guy here. They should charge meta 100%, pass 70% onto consumers to cover the costs of the psychological disorders caused by metas products.
- thatguy0900 4y agoMicrosoft couldn't make a phone and they could light money on fire for a long time. Even Samsung is only making their os as a emergency backup plan, and they have everything set up already. Suggesting any new companies make one and actually compete on more than tiny niches seems like a fantasy to me. Maybe a Chinese company could do it but the US would pull every trick it could to shut that down where it could.
- Clent 4y agoSounds like an argument for why Apple deserves the fee. They managed to get it right when all these others failed.
- thatguy0900 4y ago
- mensetmanusman 4y agoApple should pay me for the time wasted when it advertises apple maps when I tap an address by accident instead of letting me choose any other mapping service. Apple only allowing advertising of its apps in iOS is obviously an issue analogous to what MS was doing. One would think regulation would come sooner.
- labrador 4y agoInstead of investing 10 Billion in VR, seems like Meta should have built a phone as good as the iPhone but cheaper since advertising on phones is their bread and butter
- ideamotor 4y agoI agree and yet can you even imagine how dated and terrible it would be?
- lern_too_spel 4y agoYou don't have to imagine. https://readwrite.com/top-10-tech-failures-of-2013/ https://readwrite.com/top-10-tech-failures-of-2013/
- rtev 4y agoBrilliant. How did they miss this opportunity and double down on VR?
- tablespoon 4y ago>> Instead of investing 10 Billion in VR, seems like Meta should have built a phone as good as the iPhone but cheaper since advertising on phones is their bread and butter > Brilliant. How did they miss this opportunity and double down on VR? They tried building a phone when Facebook was more trusted, and it failed. A Facebook Phone project in 2022 would almost certainly be doomed to failure. IIRC, VR was an acquisition and it's more of a wide-open area than phones, so it's more plausible (but still unlikely) they could see success there.
- BizarroLand 4y agoWhen I heard that facebook was buying oculus I honestly believed that it was a terrible idea and that it would ruin what VR can be in a soulless, dirty, ugly corporate cashgrab that made no sense and that was ill-guided, ill-intended, and hopeless. I had no idea that they would completely fail to do a cashgrab and instead make the entire experience either so expensive or so terrible that no one would want to participate in it.
- ram4jesus 4y agoLeave it to Apple to make me feel bad about Zuck & Co. Ice cold.
- reustle 4y agoAlready discussed here https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33341840 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33341840
- randomopining 4y agoMeta makes the apps. Apple makes the phones. Obv they need to split the profits somehow, it does make sense.
- bsaul 4y agonot even sure if you're joking or not.. apple already makes tremendous profit on the hardware.
- thisarticle 4y agoThat doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be allowed to make a profit on services and software. That’s the direction the auto industry is moving as well.
- samfisher83 4y agoMicrosoft got smacked down for installing it's browser. How the government hasn't fined apple like a 100 billion dollars makes no sense.
- pwinnski 4y agoThat is not why Microsoft got smacked, they were given a lesser penalty than many believed they deserved, and still the result scared the antitrust enforcement division so much that it has taken decades for them to remember they have a job to do.
- sharemywin 4y agowe need some kind of data transportability. apps, games, profiles, transactions, etc. so, competitors can have a chance to compete and offer better services.

- SilverBirch 4y agoAt 350Bn market cap, I assume this is just Apple taking a pop at Meta before they put forward their acquisition offer.../s
- helen___keller 4y agoI could be wrong but I would have assumed the users promoting their posts most often are businesses who likely have laptops for their marketing professionals. Im guessing it’s more likely that Meta requires users to promote on web than fork over 30% revenue on this? It feels a little silly. Like if apple required a 30% cut from AWS because there’s an AWS console app.
