- jqpabc123 4y agoGee, if the market for your engineering degree didn't evaporate by middle age then maybe there would be a larger candidate pool. The half-life of an engineering/STEM degree in the US is about 10 years. 10 years after graduation, half of those with a degree are no longer doing engineering. Another 10 years and the numbers of those that remain are cut in half again. In other words, by the time a graduating class reaches age 45, 3/4 of it has some other job --- and a lot of this isn't by choice. I know all this from first hand experience. I had to start my own company in order to remain employed in the field.
