This tale just enraged me.
I know I'm privileged and so is my family, because I can insist that my elder relatives opt for Apple, where such issues are far, far more rare. For most of the last 6 or 7 years, my 82 year old mom has done nearly all her computing on an iPad. She only needs her Air when -- no kidding -- she needs to transfer embroidery patterns to the USB stick her sewing machine uses (about which: yes, sewing machines have gotten HELLA COMPLICATED).
No bloatware. No marketing software. No problems. But also: only possible because we can afford Apple hardware, and because she has someone in her family (me) that knows to send her there.
It's still largely a Windows world. That Windows machines are so routinely loaded with ALL THIS CRAP is completely unacceptable. MSFT could do something about it if they wanted to. I remember joking, in the 90s, that MSFT's greatest crime would end up being how much they lowered everyone's expectations about what was possible in computing, and that's definitely turning out to be true.
