"Some worst case scenarios I've seen, and not from alarmists, from pragmatists, suggest we could be looking at societal collapse in a decade.
If that's right (and it may not be, but I'm also sure the error margin isn't huge either), that means most people, possibly everyone, born today probably won't see adulthood."
Citation needed...take a deep breath, I think you are listening rather to alarmists than pragmatists.
- MrVandemar 4y agoLet's try this, just published in The Guardian. Reasonably respected news source. Tends to give decent coverage to environment issues. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/oct/27/world-close-to-irreversible-climate-breakdown-warn-major-studies https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/oct/27/world-cl... > a slew of major reports laid bare how close the planet is to catastrophe. ... > Current pledges for action by 2030, even if delivered in full, would mean a rise in global heating of about 2.5C, a level that would condemn the world to catastrophic climate breakdown ... > Research by Rockström and colleagues, published in September, found five dangerous climate tipping points may already have been passed due to the global heating caused by humanity to date, including the collapse of Greenland’s ice cap, with another five possible with 1.5C of heating. ... > Furthermore, the world is unfortunately in a geopolitically unstable state,” said Rockström. “So when we need collective action at the global level, probably more than ever since the second world war, to keep the planet stable, we have an all-time low in terms of our ability to collectively act together.” ... I don't think this is alarmist. I think this is realist. 2030 and these targets they are talking about are not 10 years away. They are about 7 years away. I don't see any will to action in politics, I don't see any will to action from my colleages, I don't see any way out. As a species we've pretty much committed suicide. The bullet has gone through the brain-tissue. We're just in the hang-time, waiting for gravity to kick in and do a slow-motion fall to the floor.
