In my view Google and Facebook turned evil the same way Microsoft did in the mid-1990s, switching from building technological improvements to using vast resources to dictate how each personal compute node should be run and how one could access the internet. But in the 1990s many developers hated it and actually used and contributed to alternatives, which eventually brought other options, from Linux to Firefox. I see no such work now, as big tech got better at buying competing tech and engineering talent, so I am not very optimistic. Maybe if the next generation is not so smartphone obsessed.
