The most disingenuous framing of the conventional 3% inflation adjustment (which, as CPI has demonstrated, does not remotely cover inflation) is that it is "a merit increase which is based on performance". Companies who try and ignore data-driven CPI during performance discussions are just encouraging job hoppers.
