I think the current war in Ukraine is showing us a problem with delivering natural gas to places that don't have it and want it (I'm thinking Germany). It's not cheap to ship by boat, and pipelines are vulnerable to "accidents". Leaking pipelines can be hard to repair and the lost gas is really bad at the massive scale that you're seeing. I remember that gas leak in California. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aliso_Canyon_gas_leak https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aliso_Canyon_gas_leak
