I think the internet is in a bit of a risky place right now. People don't know what to trust online, and scammers and manipulators are taking advantage of it. People are believing wild conspiracy theories and finding ample "evidence" to support them online. And contradictory information is either paywalled or has been labelled untrustworthy by the scammers or has become itself untrustworthy in trying to optimize for clicks/ad revenue. A quote I heard recently: "the truth is paywalled, but the lies are free."
This causes issues. "Democracy needs an educated populace to survive", and right now the populace is drowning in misinformation and just plain noise.
Workers in tech are definitely less susceptible to it because we see the tendencies much earlier. But I think there is some value in trying to add some friction. Because the majority of people _aren't_ tech workers. And they aren't prepared yet.
And to be clear, I have no doubt that this technology will become fully available in the near future. I do think until then, the friction / slower roll out is a good thing.
