Fossil fuels/tobacco industry companies are now almost unanimously seen as "evil". What about social media/online tracking companies? When will we realize that the Metaverse & co. are not "the next big thing", but the biggest threat to privacy and freedom?
- zapnuk 4y agoWe already did. It's just that some companies are more directly linked to human suffering as others. Or to put it bluntly, whats the point of privacy and freedom if your country isn't livable anymore due to climate change or you're dying of cancer due to toxic waste? But there should also be something be done about social media companies poisoning our minds, or companies like clearview putting our freedom at risk.
- mhoad 4y agoI don’t often hear people talk about so openly but I think a large number of people now look at say Facebook or Palantir on a CV especially after 2016 as morally comparable to working as a tobacco lobbyist.
- sshine 4y agoWorking for FAANG (as a software dev) is still also linked with prestige and high salary. And moral ambiguity, to some, but not to all.
