I am a two-spacer, largely because I am an Old. However, I do believe it can help with the difference between encountering the period of an abbreviation and one which serves as the end of a sentence. The period here has been operationally overloaded to serve two similar, but not identical, ends. It isn't any kind of quest of mine to convert the world, so I would not characterize it as a losing battle. Perhaps quaint.
