I grew up in Odessa and had exactly the same experience as you. But I don't remember a single occasion when a kid would disappear. Later in life I moved to New York. I lived there for 10 years. AMBER alerts were a "normal" thing. I'm not one of those paranoid parents, but there is a line when my gut feeling tells me: "no man, this is not safe".
