> she grew up entirely in a black and white room, she has never actually seen any colours.
White is all colors, or in other words, there is no colour "white", the subjective experience of it is an illusion caused by perceiving multiple frequencies of light simultaneously.
This human guinea pig raised in a black and white room will have been seeing red, and green and blue, all her life. In fact the "whiter" the room the more frequencies of light she must be experiencing.
When she finally sees an apple there is no new information at all, in fact, she is seeing a kind of shadow. It's the absence of other colours that makes the red noticeable.
