Windows Subsystem for Android declared ready for prime time
- phendrenad2 4y agoI hope this enables someone to make a new Windows Phone.
- oifjsidjf 4y agoI tried it with a few simple apps and the performance in very simplistic card-like games was ~20 fps on a very powerful PC. The input lag was very noticable when dragging cards with the mouse, so the performance is very, very far from native.
- my123 4y agoWindows Subsystem for Android currently uses the same infrastructure for GPU virt as the Android Emulator (ie command stream encapsulation with gfxstream, virtio-gpu device).
- forgotpwd16 4y agoFunny how has always been easier running Android, a Linux-based system, apps on Windows rather Linux.
- happymellon 4y agoConsidering that the Windows subsystem for Linux is just a VM, if they have done the same for Android then it's not going to be much different as to running it on Linux in a VM.
- Kukumber 4y agoWrong, windows uses a VM With linux you don't need a VM: https://waydro.id/ https://waydro.id/
- forgotpwd16 4y agoThis was probably meant as reply to sibling comment. Or you just misunderstood my comment. (Was talking about UX not the implementation.) That said how Waydroid differs from Anbox? It looks like the exact same approach. (And Anbox was a mess to install and performance was subpar.)
- Kukumber 4y agoUX? it's perfectly integrated, you can run apps without the shell a linux OS install is not 40gb, unlike windows wich ship with all the bloat imaginable, by default you get just a kernel, that's what allow linux to scale from small embedded to datacenters and with some desktop capabilities, for waydroid, installation is pretty smooth as for performance, it's bare metal, you can play 3D games with HW acceleration 3D games running on a linux phone, including PUBG ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyOgI8PRt9w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyOgI8PRt9w
- forgotpwd16 4y ago>as for performance, it's bare metal, you can play 3D games with HW acceleration Is this something you tried yourself? edit: Just saw well... the edited reply. Yeah, looks good. But wonder where the obvious performance hit in video comes from. Like, is it the software or the device.
- Kukumber 4y agoYes, i have VMs for android, macOS, Windows ready with virtmanager/kvm, gpu passthrought, baremetal perf linux for my casual, dev, gaming needs macOS for my testing and video/audio/photo editing needs windows for my testing and when a game doesn't work with proton needs A matter of a simple command line boot macos boot windows boot android You can't match that UX and performance with windows ;) EDIT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7SG7ccjn-g https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7SG7ccjn-g

- gipp 4y agoAnyone else find the "Windows Subsystem for x" naming terribly confusing? It sounds like the exact opposite of what it is.
- hulitu 4y ago> Windows Subsystem for Android declared ready for prime time Translation: They managed to compile it. Good job, Microsoft ! /s
