I remember as a child being spellbound by David Munrow's TV programmes - and then they stopped. I was too young to know or understand what had happened. Such a loss. It's a bit of a chicken and egg situation I suppose with these instruments. If there isn't a critical mass of players we don't hear them played well and so no-one picks them up. I think Mahler would have loved Shawms in an orchestra. They sound very Mahlerian to me!
