There's an important line that SF has not crossed (yet): murder still causes police response. In a decade or so, it will be like most large Latin American cities: murder will cause same lackluster police response as currently car break-ins do. Rich will have their own security, and poor will be afraid to walk after dark.
- nxm 4y agoSadly I worry this will be the case. Meanwhile all the “defund the police” politicians will have plenty of armed guards to protect them
- cft 4y agoI wanted to add: unlike our virtuous downvoters, i have been traveling for 5 years, and i have actually been to most Latin American capitals: Guatemala City, San Salvador, Tegucigalpa, Managua, etc... It's not the immigrants from those places that thieve , but the government of SF is like that of Managua.
- thatfrenchguy 4y agoMurders used to be so much more common 30-40 years ago in the city, just ask someone who was there back then.
- diebeforei485 4y agoIt was mostly at night time. Brazen things happen in the middle of the day now.
- ratsmack 4y agoIt appears that there was a bump up in the rate during the early 2K's. https://www.macrotrends.net/cities/us/ca/san-francisco/murder-homicide-rate-statistics https://www.macrotrends.net/cities/us/ca/san-francisco/murde...
