I think the biggest difficulty most people encounter with nix is if they need to run something which doesn't have a nix package already. As soon as you step off a 'happy path' with Nix, you very quickly hit a lot of "you need to know what you're doing". That might involve understanding understanding how the program you want to run is built, the idiosyncrasies of how NixOS is arranged, understanding how the Nix packaging code is organised, etc.
