Biden's marijuana possession pardon will release no one
- ZeroGravitas 4y agoHeadline seems to have been changed to be more clickbaity, but interesting article: > In his announcement, Biden urged state governors to follow his lead in granting mass clemency to people behind bars for state marijuana possession crimes, which some estimates put at 30,000 nationwide. Politico warns not to expect much from this plea. “The governors most sympathetic to the president’s goal of pardoning those with nonviolent marijuana offenses are way ahead of him, having wiped records or set up systems for people to get their convictions expunged as state lawmakers legalized weed,” write Paul Demko and Mona Zhang. Plus up to 6,500 people might get their right to vote back.
- jiveturkey 4y agoThanks. My take on it was this is about mid terms, and nothing at all really to do with rolling back the war on drugs. The governors "way ahead of him" are in states that are already voting blue. It's meant to put the red states at risk, in a damned if you do, damned if you don't way. It's fairly brilliant honestly, strategically, but tactically I don't think will have measurable effect.
- bergenty 4y agoBut it will make a lot of people employable.
- stevenalowe 4y agoclever but mostly pointless political theatre - the President could order the various TLAs to reclassify cannabis and/or end the War on (some) Drugs (WoD) immediately. The WoD machinery appears to be a permanent part of the military-industrial complex.
