YouTube Premium family plan getting a 23% price increase next month
- sschueller 4y agoThey are also no longer grandfathering the longest supporting users like me (back when it was Google music) that have been paying $14.99 for the family plan. Instead they are giving me an extra few months before charging me the new price. So much for loyalty. Nothing stops me now from switching to another service but at this point I think I will be digging out my pirate hat from the ship wreck...
- hombre_fatal 4y agoI don’t even know what it would look like to “pirate” Youtube on a smartphone that’s not more convenient than paying up. youtube-dl and then moving videos to phone is too much work, and alternative front ends always seem to have their quirks that turn me off.
- zucked 4y agoI think this a pretty excessive hike, and told them as such. I readily admit that I consume a lot of Youtube - it's replaced a lot of my other content (cable, etc) and I'm willing to pay for it. But this is a pretty big step. It'll be over $300 USD/ year, in fact. When they biffed the Google Play Music -> YT Music transition, I tried to cancel but the ads - oh, god, the ads. They were TERRIBLE and I've only heard they've gotten worse. Ugh. I really like compensating content creators more than they get from ad rolls, but this has me real torn. There are, of course, ways to pay less via other countries portals, but I expect those loopholes to be closed shortly. I primarily consume on iOS mobile devices, so ad-blocking is tough (though Vanced is A+ if you're an Android user).
- selbyk 4y agoThis reminded me to cancel my subscription after my 3 month free trial.

- thebitstick 4y agoPrice hike is even worse if you're a stubborn Apple user who prefers managing subscriptions with IAP. > we will be increasing your Premium family plan price to $29.99/month. Apple will continue to manage your payment. Note that the rate for Premium family plans signed up via our website will be $22.99/month
