I upgraded from Ubuntu 20.04 to 22.04 recently, and am experiencing issues where Firefox feels sluggish and X hangs for a second when I type in the terminal too quickly. Makes me wanna move away from Ubuntu. Also the idea of these major updates where the package manager mutates half the filesystem for 30 minutes straight sounds like a super brittle procedure, and snaps seem to address this, except that it feels wrong to have every package vendor its deps. I'd like to have nixos without the learning curve please...
- lvass 4y agoIf you just want to install packages, nix-env is really simple.
- nrabulinski 4y agoWhich, in my opinion, completely defeats the whole purpose of using NixOS. The last thing I want is a bunch of ad-hoc changes to my reproducible environment setup

- Enzime 4y agoI think there's still benefit in using Nix for imperative package management, as the packages are isolated. This means you don't need to clutter your global environment with the dependencies of your programs.
- nrabulinski 4y agoIf you look only at the new nix command and flakes and disregard all the “legacy” commands nix is very simple and the learning curve isn’t much steeper than jumping to any other distro. The documentation around flakes is also much more complete and much higher quality on top of the NixOS discord being happy to help or point to where you can find the answers.
- rgoulter 4y agoI think the biggest difficulty most people encounter with nix is if they need to run something which doesn't have a nix package already. As soon as you step off a 'happy path' with Nix, you very quickly hit a lot of "you need to know what you're doing". That might involve understanding understanding how the program you want to run is built, the idiosyncrasies of how NixOS is arranged, understanding how the Nix packaging code is organised, etc.
- remram 4y agoI have this weird issue where holding volume down crashes the entire desktop. It is rather strange. No problem with other keys, no problem tapping volume down rather than holding it, no instability anywhere else that I've noticed. It is the strangest thing.
