- __mharrison__ 4y agoVisited the San Juan Islands this summer. Super beautiful up there. The Brits certainly had the better camp.
- dudeinjapan 4y agoSan Juans are one of the most beautiful places on Earth
- polartx 4y agoReminds me of the Honey War (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honey_War https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honey_War), where some ambiguity in the cartography of waterways and a self-idolizing governor nearly led to the militias of neighboring states squaring off.
- colinmegill 4y agoLived on SJI for 4 years, taught at the independent school there as a history teacher and taught the Pig War. One of the standouts if you're visiting is the contrast between English Camp: https://www.google.com/search?q=english+camp+sji&rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS948US948&sxsrf=ALiCzsYUoP7lzU70G9tqEEcXnaVNKowtaQ:1666251862844&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwielpDzp-76AhXzBjQIHei0AocQ_AUoA3oECAEQBQ&biw=1680&bih=946&dpr=2 https://www.google.com/search?q=english+camp+sji&rlz=1C5CHFA... and American Camp: https://www.google.com/search?q=american+camp+san+juan+island&rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS948US948&sxsrf=ALiCzsaX52pVlslxRFUOxPQrXjGQ0HGBmw:1666251895157&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi-s8SCqO76AhUMGDQIHXhbBvwQ_AUoAnoECAMQBA&biw=1680&bih=946&dpr=2 https://www.google.com/search?q=american+camp+san+juan+islan... at opposite ends of the island. One is very exposed and windy and an extremely exposed place to set up camp, and the other is English Camp :)
- komposit 4y ago“ Despite being referred to as a "war" there were no casualties on either side, aside from the pig.”
- cafard 4y agoThere was also a so-called pig war in the Balkans about 1910, also bloodless--this one even for the pigs. The Austro-Hungarian Empire refused to allow the import of pigs from Serbia, which was I guess a large share of Serbia's export trade. This it intended to bring Serbia to a right way of thinking. The embargo only increased Serbia's resentment of the empire.
