The movie _Brexit: The Uncivil War_ from 2019 [0] is not only amazingly entertaining, it also details the so-called _car crash in slow motion_ in vivid dramatic details quite easy to comprehend.
Basically, they found (with the help of Cambridge Analytica and FB) a few million Brits that never voted and rarely got polled, then targeted them with nonsensical pro-Brexit rhetoric for years, before making sure they get to vote.
It could be argued that the original movement that paved the way to such a trend was the Islamist wave which led to the attacks of 9/11 (and the following Islamist attacks worldwide), which politically weaponized Islam using lots of money and everything Internet had to offer.
Similar scheme led to the Tea Party, which led to the Trump election in the U.S. [1], which seems to be linked to some ongoing global trends like neo-fascism and identity politics. As a matter of fact, it appears that some clever people found a way to exploit civil society shortcomings using some of the data hoarding tools we call social medias.
The whole climate change drama is caught in the same Web (pun intended) of manipulation, and it might end up aggravating the situation, to the benefit of big oil.
These waves make little sense to most people, excepted that it shows a strong will to create new opportunities while shaking the status quo, and profit from the shakedown. As some do (will) profit from the unrest created.
Maybe it's time to harden our democracies so to make them resistant to such schemes and manipulations, without ending up with an Orwellian nightmare (looking at you, Down Under people).
