I think people are OK to admitting others are better, for example, I admit Hussain Bolt runs way faster than me. What people don't like is those "elites" telling us how to live our lives, or how to think, or what to accept as normal and what not, while coming from an extremely privileged background that most people don't have, where their "achievement" are more of a consequence of their upbringing and less of a personal success story.
- MichaelZuo 4y agoThat seems to be a different issue. Recognizing the fact that very above average people exist does not mean recognizing any group as the final arbiters of the human condition.
- Godel_unicode 4y agoThat’s certainly one group, but there’s also a very loud group of people who insist that elites are just normal humans who were allowed to bloom. I think there are several reasons here; some are ideologically opposed to the existence of outliers, some are worried about the chilling effect of telling people that no matter how hard they work they’ll never be at Gausses level as a mathematician, and some are comforted that their lack of success isn’t their fault because they weren’t given opportunities.
