The FTC is looking at fixing appliance repair, but it needs to go beyond manuals
- bell-cot 4y agoA better idea than Right to Repair - charge a "landfill tax" on appliances, based on how fast they end up in the junk. I don't much care if my washing machine has to be replaced in only 5 years because (1) I can't get the manual, or (2) I can't get the parts, or (3) the price of the replacement part is $$$, or (4) the cumulative cost & hassle of its repairs is skyrocketing, or (5) it silently relied on a now-dead manufacturer's web site API to work, or (6) Microsoft ended security updates for the Windows 10 OS that it was running, or (7).... (Yeah, figuring out how much tax to charge on which appliance would be problematic. But with how many easy-looking ways there are for greedy appliance manufacturers to comply with "right to repair", yet still screw their customers over...)
