"My spouse is 39 so the window has closed for biological children, more or less." No it hasn't. I just had a baby and my wife is 40. We did have 2 other kids earlier though. But age is not necessarily the issue so don't make that an excuse. If you want to have kids, have them whenever you are ready. Even if the biological clock has run out, you can always adopt if you really want. Have you actually discussed this in detail with your spouse ?
