It's still nowhere close to how good Google's reverse image search was several years back. Ever since they handicapped that, there just hasn't been as good of a way to do reverse image searches. I've tried on searching for images I know are on the internet, running them through Google, TinEye, Bing, Yandex, to no avail.
It seems like a lot of the focus has moved from "find this exact image" to "find similar images," like you give it a picture of a Husky and it'll find more pictures of Huskies.
- coolca 4y agoInteresting, I didn't know Google reverse image was better several years ago.
- swyx 4y agowhy exactly did they handicap it? i've noticed it's also weirdly desktop only, i have to add ?imghp to get it to display the reverse image search button on ipad
- vintermann 4y agoWell, yandex search was better for a while. Then Bellingcat managed to identify some spy with it. Then yandex got worse too. I think maybe that's part of the picture. Edit: I looked up the details again. It was an FSB officer named Andrei Burlaka, involved in the shooting down of MH17. Someone in Russia were selling their TV set online, and had taken a picture of the TV for the ad. It just so happened that Burlaka was on TV exactly that moment. Yandex images indexed the ad, leading the investigators to identify him.
- AdvancedCarrot 4y agoMy suspicion is that they did it for privacy reasons. Let me give you an example - you have a photo of someone. Should Google give you their facebook profile in the results if you search for the picture? Their AI is certainly capable of this, but some people would be understandably creeped out by it.
- swyx 4y agowell then why remove it on ipad/phone but not on desktop? make up your mind google
- hbn 4y agoI heard they did it because it could find non-watermarked versions of stock photos, which stock photo companies weren't too happy about
- tiffanyh 4y agoWhere can I find Google reverse image search? To be clear what I'm talking about, with tineye.com you can feed it an image and TinEye will show you all places on the internet that no only use that image - also use parts/portion of that image. I think what you're describing is just straight up image search.
- TOMDM 4y agoIf you go to google image search at https://images.google.com https://images.google.com and click the little camera icon, you can give it an image to search by. It used to be much better than it is now though, I don't really bother with it these days.
- MonkeyMalarky 4y agoIt was ruined for me the moment it became merged with Google Lense and productized with ads. When I do a reverse image search, I want to find that image! Not find all the shitty online retailers selling things identified within the photo!
- dmd 4y agoIn chrome, right click on any image and select Search Image with Google Lens.
- mgdlbp 4y agoJust this week Google's reverse image search began directing to "Google Lens" for me, which does visual search again, albeit rather poorly.
