Germany slaps messaging app Telegram with $5M fine
- yieldcrv 4y agoha this article reads just like I expected, they probably tried to use the Report feature on Telegram that's piped to the null route
- kkoste 4y agoTLDR: Germany angry that they can't monitor private conversations between users on a messaging app that value privacy. EU in general: Facebook Messenger violates users privacy. inb4: Telegram is not private. Use Signal instead.
- GoToRO 4y agoAre those users terrorists?

- WhyNotHugo 4y agoThis is not about monitoring; this is about a missing "report" button. If someone adds me to a group distributing illegal content in Germany, the law states that I must have a mechanism to report it. This is about a _participant_ reporting things, not a third party spying in.
- alwayslikethis 4y agoHow do they expect to make Telegram pay for it? It doesn't seem like Telegram has a legal presence in Germany.
- WhyNotHugo 4y ago> A Germany-based law firm has since declared that it represents Telegram, but this wasn’t enough to prevent the fines being issued, the Federal Office of Justice said. I get the impression that they do have a presence. Not sure if the government can somehow punish them for not paying, but I don't think Telegram wants to go head on against the government; the government will move to block them and put them on a wanted list (figure of speech). That's bad for business.
- riedel 4y agoWhile I believe it is mostly symbolic politics, it might block future commercial activities of Telegram. Particularly if a European enforcement order exists I guess it will be difficult to escape if you want to make money inside the EU.
