I worked for Phones4u (RIP) in the UK, in their training department. I was amazed at how much effort and money they put into training their new employees. Every week, ~15-20 people would travel to their training office in Birmingham for 3-5 days, they'd stay in a hotel, have their meals provided for, take part in various training sessions throughout the week, only to be evaluated at the end, and let go if they didn't do well. Obviously, training a sales team how to sell was in their best interest, and would pay off eventually, but that initial investment was just surprising to me.
