Shumai: Fast Differentiable Tensor Library in TypeScript with Bun and Flashlight
- kbd 4y agoIt's interesting that this was built for Bun (vs other js runtimes) because of its specific properties. Cool to see Bun emerge early as Zig's "killer app".
- 4pkjai 4y agoI shouldn't be annoyed by this, but as a Cantonese speaker I really dislike this name.
- lgessler 4y agoGenuinely curious: for what reason?
- joshxyz 4y agoFilipino here. it's a slang term for dimsum food! haha. We spell it as siomai though.
- whimsicalism 4y ago> it's a slang term for dimsum food! My guess is that is intentional...
- faitswulff 4y agoShumai is a Mandarin Chinese romanization of the name of a dim sum dish. Dim sum in general is a southern / Cantonese tradition. It’s typically siumai in Cantonese.
- faitswulff 4y ago我说错了哎呀是烧麦shaomai不是shumai。shumai是日本语的
- powerapple 4y agowhat's not to like it? It is delicious.
- maxloh 4y agoIs that "燒賣"? As a HongKonger I didn't learn much about pinyin.
- brrrrrm 4y agoDue to the overly westernized transliteration?
- numpad0 4y agoOr Japonic? Most of kanji transliterations on the Internet are Japanese based, but since Japanese is an isolate language of unknown origin[1], they might sound weird in the bulk of East Asia where Chinese languages are predominantly spoken or otherwise not insignificant. 1: Technically not; languages in rural Japanese islands are no longer considered dialects, and as such the language is not the sole member of its family. The origin is still unknown.
- xdfgh1112 4y agoThat is how it's written in Japanese (technically shuumai), and you know how programmers love to name things after random Japanese words.

- the_optimist 4y agoThere are many variants and spellings. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shumai https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shumai
- whimsicalism 4y agoFlashlight is a really kickass ML library and the only good alternative to torch on C++ that I know of. Excited to see what this will enable.
- william-evans 4y agoThis is very exciting. Given the size of the JavaScript/TypeScript community it was missing something like this, especially, for proof-of-concept use cases.
