One of the challenges is with website discovery. You used to go to a website and they would link to other websites and it would be an interesting bit of discovery but now Google doesn't really allow you to have a list of websites which was common before Google. Those "friends" of the website pages are gone now Google doesn't want people to discover other websites through yours other then a few carefully managed links out but no long page with a list of links. Now discovery needs to be done through Google but below the top 4 ads and above the bottom 3 ads.
