Musk retracts his decision and will continue to fund Starlink in Ukraine
- Arnt 4y agoIt seems to me that Starlink has per-area infrastructure and costs. At least service is enabled per area, and customers are accepted in those areas and not in others. If that's true, then it's reasonable to assume that serving Ukraine prevents Starlink from opening service to some area with would-be customers on a waiting list. I'm curious what that per-area infrastructure and costs are. Does anyone here know anything about that?
- type_Ben_struct 4y agoI believe that the satellites are put into specific orbits or focused on specific geographies. In addition, there’s a number of costs to serving Ukraine: 1. Cost of sending ground stations to Ukraine vs. selling commercially. 2. Cost of paying the on ground ISP/Telco providers for bandwidth / transit. 3. Costs of mitigating nation state attacks on Starlink infrastructure. 4. The network only has so much capacity, opportunity cost of allocating that to Ukraine. I’m not a Musk fan, but I do think he has a point. Government are spending billions on defence contracts / aid. Why shouldn’t they fund Starlink?
