Ask HN: What are your thoughts on ELv2?
Do you consider it open-source or source-available? Does your org use software with the Elastic License 2.0? For COSS (as an org/individual/contributor), do you like ELv2, or do you prefer e.g. SSPL, AGPL, or BSL?
- metadat 4y agoI just switched to OpenSearch and haven't had a reason to look back. It works great, is true FOSS, and is low drama. Events like elastic getting greedy and turning to make trouble against the very community that made them a success - it's a major turn off, and I want nothing more to do with them. Life is too short, and already hard enough when everyone is behaving as a good actor.
- ezekg 4y agoIs this frustration specific to Elastic, or do you actually not like the ELv2 license for COSS?
- metadat 4y agoYes, somewhat specific. I was a big proponent of Elastic until they pulled that stunt. If a project started out with the ELv2 or similar license, fine. I wouldn't care. Abd it's also unlikely such a project will ever take off and become a runaway success, because no bigco will touch the likes of ELv2. Elastic essential did a hoisting trick, pulling out the carpet afterwards with the license change once the community was cemented in place.
- ezekg 4y agoWhy would no bigco use a project licensed under ELv2? It seems permissive for most use cases, as far as I understand it.
- metadat 4y agoLegal doesn't want to deal with it, and many bigcos do operate their own clouds which paves the way for future conflict and lawsuits. The industry titans are enormous, so there's a lot of process and very difficult to get changes approved, especially for the likes of a single snowflake such as ES.
