The title is misleading, the actual first one has been operating commercially since 2018 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanmen_Nuclear_Power_Station https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanmen_Nuclear_Power_Station). There are another couple of them in operation.
- UncleOxidant 4y agoYeah, first in the US but not in the world.
- kelnos 4y agoIt's also notable that it took less than a year after agreeing on a contract for the Chinese to break ground on the Sanmen plant, while Vogtle sat around for 7 years waiting on US regulatory approval. The pair of reactors at Sanmen also only cost CNY 50.1B (just under US$7B) to build, while it seems costs at Vogtle are at $30B and counting. (At least if the figures on their respective Wikipedia pages are accurate.)
