“An AUP notice recently went out in error that included incorrect information,” a PayPal spokesperson said. “PayPal is not fining people for misinformation and this language was never intended to be inserted in our policy.
It's ironic that under PayPal's prior policy they should be fining themselves. Who seriously believes that a company like PayPal accidentally publishes a new terms of service that accidentally contains whole clauses that somehow nobody noticed? Did they hire cats as their lawyers? As they admit, their own claim is blatant misinformation.
This thing started after they tried to ban the Daily Sceptic and other anti-COVID-lockdown groups. They kept changing their mind about what policies these people had supposedly violated, then discovered that the targets had a lot more respect inside the ruling party in Britain than PayPal expected. The government wasn't having any of it and started talking about legislation to stop them doing this sort of thing; just days later PayPal suddenly restored the accounts they'd banned, claiming it was all just a misunderstanding all along.
Then just a week or so later this happens, and days later they (partly) backpedal once again after cancelling PayPal accounts becomes a meme that goes viral on Twitter. Their former CEO (David Marcus) condemns them on Twitter, then Elon Musk does too (one of their founders).
This whole episode makes PayPal look chaotic and incompetent. There must be some massive internal culture war going on between activist and non-activist employees. The revised ToS still claims they can fine people $2500 for "intolerance" or anything "objectionable", which tends to have a remarkably flexible definition based on whatever activists want it to mean that day. Keeping any deposits on PayPal after this would be extremely unwise. Even people on the left aren't safe from being labelled intolerant, as many lifelong feminist campaigners have recently discovered.
