Alaska officials investigate disappearance of an estimated 1B snow crabs
- benj111 4y agoNice website! It breaks the back button as well as displaying a cookie popup, 'better in the app' popup, notifications popup, and a click to read more button. And that's with an ad blocker.
- notRobot 4y agoSite is appalling. What ad blocker are you using? uBO seems to block all of that for me.
- benj111 4y agoDns66 which seems to block most ads including in the yt app. I've just installed ubo in Firefox and that got rid of the notification Popup and The click to read button. Back button still broken though.
- Rebelgecko 4y agoWhat about the crabs?
- mayormcmatt 4y agoYes, the site has crabs, too.
- sweetheart 4y agoHopefully this will serve as a catalyst for helping to make people less dependent on farming animals as a way of life, both for the people who harvest/kill them, and the folks who choose to eat them. The thought that a billion crabs could "disappear" is alarming and deeply saddening, but I'd like to hold onto the hope that they are out there still, simply living rather than being dredged up by the hundreds and unceremoniously killed. I wish the people who rely on the industry the best, unless that means more killing of innocent animals.
- benj111 4y agoSo what would your take be, if this were seaweed? Or algae? Your post almost reads as if you're more concerned about the fishermen losing than the outcome of the crabs. So even from an animal rights pov, your comment seems. Flawed.
- sweetheart 4y agoMy take would be: That really sucks, and I hope it's not indicative of more alarming things to come for the environment. I hope the industries affected are able to stabilize. > you're more concerned about the fishermen losing than the outcome of the crabs I'm concerned about both, so I'm confused how my comment is "flawed".
- benj111 4y ago>I'm concerned about both, so I'm confused how my comment is "flawed". Well I already said how I was interpreting it. So I'm confused as to why you're confused. You are presumably aware that people can interpret things differently to what you may have intended. So when someone points out the failings in that interpretation, you should be able to understand it is based on that interpretation and that I'm not psychic and able to see what you meant to say whilst inserting a strawman argument of what I knew you didn't mean. To interpret further. And this is again my interpretation. You seem not to be able to empathise with people whose livelihoods are being threatened, the crabs, or me in this conversation.
- sweetheart 4y ago124 words, and yet, nothing actually said.
- yellowapple 4y ago> Hopefully this will serve as a catalyst for helping to make people less dependent on farming animals as a way of life The article is about wild crab populations. That has precisely nothing to do with it - except that if anything, farming crabs would reduce the need to go scoop them up from the wild.
- Maursault 4y agoIt's funny (not haha) the watermen interviewed on national news are speculating on where the crabs might have gone. "Maybe they migrated North?" Is there any consideration to the possibility if not probability that a critical point has been reached, and the crab population has collapsed primarily due to over-harvesting? Far be it from me to stand in the way of watermen entitlement to harvest a hold full of crabs, but maybe they should explore retraining for new careers in software development, as software consumers can be over-harvested with expired licenses every couple of years indefinitely.
