First it doesn't make you magically better at programming. You may think of yourself as an above avarage programmer subjectively.
Developing software is a social endevour. You have to understand shareholders needs and feelings to create successful software. You must understand needs and feelings of your peers to write maintainable code. As an asperger myself I suggest to improve on social and psychological skills to become a competent developer. And while those skills come natural for non-autistic people, learning them "the hard way" can result in above avarage social skills - at least in a professional environment.
