Analysts estimate SSD prices will drop 50 percent by mid-2023
- ksec 4y agoWhile a 50% drop of NAND price ( "price", not cost ) does not imply a 50% drop in SSD RSP. The oversupply issues is very real. Something not foreseen in all previous projection. And arguably not seen in NAND's history. NAND supplier ends up with additional capacity, as everyone was crying for more in 2018 - 2020. Those are just coming online. While having less demand in every single sector. From Smartphone, Tablet, Laptop, PC, and External Media. The only growing ( or Flat ) demand has been Cloud Computing. But even that for some reason seems to be slowing down as well. AFAIK, Cloud Computing is still growing, AWS is still building as fast as they could, but not SSD. ( May be delay in data or missing some context here ) I haven't even mention NAND coming from China. And of course, exchange rate, most NAND are coming from South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. So we end up with a perfect Storm. I would love to see 4TB NAND under $200. It is probably worth mentioning, the fundamental hasn't changed. The Cost of NAND, isn't getting much cheaper. There are no roadmap to suggest the big three could reduce cost per bit by 50% between now to 2027. I hope there are some breakthrough in the near future which provides a path where continuous cost reduction being possible.
- ysleepy 4y agoApple shipping 1000€+ laptops with 256 GB will finally become so ridiculous that they'll hopefully just stop being extortionists and just put in 1TB. Or a 700€ ipad air with 64GB storage, it's embarrassing. Same with phones. I hate tech for these practices, the artificial upgrade ladders and the subscription madness.
