I think you'll be surprised how many racing series allow spectators in the pit areas. Some of them charge extra for tickets, but many don't. Even F1 will allow you into the pits (for a steep price). But I've been in the pits for Indycar and it's supporting races and it's really awesome. Sometimes it's fun to just swing by the track during a smaller event and check out the pits.
