I remember the moment when I used iPhone4. It was the first phone with retina display, the touch and crip rendering was very responsive. It was the moment my perception of smartphone quality changed.
VR is great. I don't think the hardware is there for mass adoption. VR hasn't had its iPhone4 retina moment yet. When it does, it will take off.
We need ~100 pixes per degree of vision to fool the eye. Assuming 120d horizontal and vertical display per eye, we are looking at 12,000x12,000 pixel display for each eye. Current meta headsets have 1800 × 1920 px per eye. We need 10x that.
There's more: accurate head and hands tracking, 90hz high fidelity rendering, affordable pricing, entertaining worlds, e.t.c.
It will take a while, but we'll get there. I hope Meta doesn't give up so easily.
