- josephcsible 4y ago> “Apps may be distributed on Google Play provided they comply with our developer guidelines, including the requirement to effectively moderate user-generated content and remove objectionable posts such as those that incite violence,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement. If that's the policy, then why are Web browsers allowed in the Play Store without having a list of sites that they refuse to load?
- metadat 4y agoImpeccable logic, my dear Joseph. I posit they are allowed because, just like in real life, some policies, rules, and laws exist primarily to be selectively enforced against "unfavorables".
- z3c0 4y agoI think who's hosting the content is the differentiator. Maybe an allowed app that's hosting the objectionable content itself would be a more apt comparison.
- josephcsible 4y agoI don't think this is it, because Google has also banned third-party Reddit clients, but not the official one, over NSFW content posted to Reddit: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3724102 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3724102
- inhumantsar 4y agoThey banned _a single client_ for not disclosing that Reddit contains NSFW content and then unbanned it after reasonable changes were made.
- phendrenad2 4y agoReal answer: They allow 3rd-party browsers because there would be public outcry against them if they disallowed Firefox/Chrome. That's it. That's the reason. They'd probably block them, too, if they could get away with it cleanly.
- hota_mazi 4y agoBecause browsers do not own nor control the content they display.
- xyzzyz 4y agoThey browsers could ban domains just as social media apps can ban people. They could literally add a “report” button to browser UI, hire a bunch of moderators, ban certain pages and do the exact same kind of moderation of the web as Facebook does on their site. What you propose is not a real distinction, it’s just description of how things turned out being.
