Donald Sądoway made an impressive case for metal batteries using commodity materials Magnesium and Antinomy, how comes the switch to Aluminium and Sulphur?
There's supposed to be a Data Centre in Western USA being built out using these Magnesium/Antinomy batteries. Was it found to be unfeasible, just a different chemistry and this one is another tech being developed?
There's also the point that Sulphur is so cheap because it is a by product of the oil refining industry. Sulphur not just being used in new batteries, but a key part in extracting metals from ores.
There is room for lots of battery technologies, just so long as they can get lodged on the experience curve that reduces costs with scale, there are plenty of niches for that various chemistries could be an ideal fit for.
I'm guessing for peak shaving that low cost storage is going to take over the market, but scaling of materials supply appears to be the underlying issue.
