Sometimes data incompatibility is a soft failure as well.
I was using a USB3 hard drive for couple of years. Then one day I needed to write about 60 megabytes/second to that disk, continuously for a few hours. It didn’t work, my program was failing due to insufficient disk IO bandwidth. Only then I realized that despite USB port and the disk are both USB 3.0+, the USB-C cable linking them only supports USB 2.0 for the data.
