Northeast U.S. Blackout of 2003
- rglover 4y agoPosting this because of the "why" which I was unaware of until now: > The blackout's proximate cause was a software bug in the alarm system at the control room of FirstEnergy, an Akron, Ohio–based company, which rendered operators unaware of the need to redistribute load after overloaded transmission lines drooped into foliage. What should have been a manageable local blackout cascaded into the collapse of much of the Northeast regional electricity distribution system.
- cwdegidio 4y agoAlways amuses me to see this since I grew up right next to the power plant that started the cascade (literally at the end of my mom's street). I wasn't in town when it started, but was on my way to see Iggy & The Stooges in Detroit. We were completely unaware of what had happened until we pulled into Detroit, and we all thought, "I heard Detroit was bad, but I didn't know it was 'no electricity' bad... lol". Little did I know, the problem started at the end of my street.
