It's an admittedly squishy heuristic, but my gut feeling about whether a technology will stick or not is usually driven by how people outside the tech world talk about it. Most of my community is outside of the tech world at this point.
For the iPhone and Apple watch, just about every I knew wanted one as soon as it was announced. Google glass? People were joking about how they'd rip one off of someone's face if they caught them filming. Uber/Lyft? Everyone who was pumped to ride at 10 bucks shrugged and found something else at 50.
I'm sure Meta has made huge strides in leveling up immersive VR technology overall. But apart from people with a vested interest, I only hear about the metaverse as the butt a joke. There are lots of cool applications for VR. I'm just not betting on this particular one.
- ForHackernews 4y agoVR headsets look dorky and isolate you from other people in the real world. I'm inclined to agree with you that's probably enough to mean it will fail to ever go mainstream. Ironically, AR/some better Google Glass might be a hit, if it didn't look so stupid and the people pushing it were less hated. Wait until TikTok makes an AR headset and gets K-pop groups to promote it.
- anonred 4y agoYou might be underestimating normalization of deviance in society. Meta’s already demonstrated that the younger generation will adopt VR headsets for gaming. “Dorkiness” is very unlikely to be a sufficient barrier here.
- ForHackernews 4y agoHeelys[0] are popular with the younger generation but will never go mainstream, despite having more practical utility than any metaverse offering from 'Meta'. [0] https://heelys.com/ https://heelys.com/
- turtlebits 4y agoI have no interest in the metaverse, or socializing at all in VR. I just want to play games and use fitness apps, which I find value in. That said, there is nothing wrong with trying to expand into the consumer/enterprises.
